How to use a PDF as a teleprompter

Your talk already exists as a PDF: lecture notes, a deck export, a report. The core workflow extracts the text into a scrolling script you read privately, and when the audience needs the pages too, a screen recording of them rides along as the poster video. It all runs inside the PDF teleprompter feature; this guide covers the details and the edge cases.

Choose the right workflow first

Text-as-script: the PDF content becomes your prompt. Best when the PDF is essentially your speech in document form, like a talk outline or lecture notes you plan to read nearly verbatim.

Pages-as-visual: when the document should stay on screen while you explain it, record the screen while paging through the PDF, or export the deck as a video, and use that clip as the poster video. You still write a separate spoken script; the pages ride along as the visual.

From PDF to finished recording

Import the file
Bring the PDF in from Files, Mail, or AirDrop. Text-based PDFs import with extractable text; scanned PDFs are images, so paste or retype their text instead.
Split long documents
One script per section or chapter. Short sections rehearse better, and a retake costs minutes instead of the whole recording.
Clean up the text
Remove headers, footers, and page numbers. Break long paragraphs into breath-length lines and fix multi-column text that imported in the wrong order.
Arrange the recording
Person-first with the script as prompt, or a screen recording of the pages as the poster video with your camera bubble. Fit keeps the whole frame visible; Fill covers it.

Cleanup that makes PDFs readable

PDFs are designed for pages, not for prompting. After import, expect to spend a few minutes per section: delete repeated running heads, join sentences split across page boundaries, and re-list bullet points that lost their order. Multi-column layouts are the worst offenders; if the text arrives scrambled, copy the text out of the PDF in your reader instead and paste it into the editor.

Edge cases worth knowing

Scanned PDFs: no extractable text, so paste or retype the script, and show the pages as a screen-recorded poster video if needed
Huge decks: import in sections; hundred-page imports are slow to navigate and painful to retake
Multi-column text: extraction order can scramble; paste from your PDF reader instead
Heavy math or code: keep it in the on-screen material and speak around it; prompting symbols reads terribly
Copyright material: prompt from documents you have the right to present

A complete example: recording a lecture from notes

Say your lecture notes are a twelve-page PDF. Split them into three sections and paste the spoken version of section one into the script editor, broken into short lines. If students should see the pages, record your screen while paging through that section and add the recording as the poster video with your camera bubble in a corner. Record, preview, retake the weakest part, then repeat for sections two and three.

Can a PDF scroll like a teleprompter?

Yes. Import the PDF and extract its text into a scrolling script with Voice Sync or fixed-speed scrolling. If the audience needs the pages, add a screen recording of them as the poster video while the script scrolls privately.

Why did my PDF text import in the wrong order?

Multi-column and complex layouts often extract out of order. Copy the text from your PDF reader and paste it into the script editor instead, then re-break lines for reading.

Can I present a PDF deck with my face visible?

What about scanned PDFs?
